I want to start a small business and create my own website. As far as using a computer is concerned, I can do the usual - e-mails, surfing, Word etc, but I have no idea how to create a website. I'd be grateful if anyone could give me a few pointers of where to start and what pitfalls to watch out for. Also, those of you are familiar with this stuff, what do you think my chances of success are? Thanks!

I would suggest using a prepacked content system like joomla or drupal. They can offer a lot right out of the box and are very extendible with lots of modules.
Chances of success with will proportionate to what you put into it. Start with your local community and grow awareness of what it is you offer from there. there are too many websites offering too many things for yours to simply standout from the crowd.

If you decide to use joomla or drupal then use a pre made joomla or drupal template to make your site most easier. You can get a customized template from http://www.weberforums.com

You can choose web design company or You can also use web design software for design your site. There are many software available on net.For example I am using PersonalWebKit software .This comes with several templates from which you will base your design on. Each template comes with different colors, banner backgrounds, and text styles. Some templates even allow you to use one of your own digital photos as a banner background. You will add your own text to the banner background to make your own graphical banner at the top of your website.

It depends upon you that either you want to make it by yourself or you will make it through the website development company.I suggest you to go for a company because they will make it more appropriate then you.
