I am nearing the end of my MSc thesis which dealt with JSP and JSF used to create an online graphical UI for data drawn from a mysql db (a stats package). At the last moment I've been asked to produce an in depth report on the benefits of PHP in comparison with these. I haven't found anything very useful despite a lot of searching online.
If anyone has any links or ideas for material that may help with this it would be very greatly appreciated - someone, somewhere must have produced a document detailing the benefits of each, I just need to find it!
Thanks in advance.

Well I think that PHP or Java, is the supreme language of the universe, PHP didn’t support OOP until PHP4, and didn’t have a strong IDE, while Java on the other hand has always been distinctive defined by its OOP nature, and has has always had great IDEs. Java and PHP run in virtual machines, which means that neither perform as well as compiled C or C++. PHP allows for chaos. Included files get their variables from whatever file they were included, you can call normal methods as if they were static, and in Java everything is a class, period.

Java has a much wider range of application. It's also much harder to learn. If you know perl, you can pick up PHP in no time anyway.PHP can handle your 'systemcalls' to C and can handle XML.There are tons of resources if you get stuck, many online tutorials to help you get started, and also quite a few forums to help with PHP debugging and support.

If you ask most Java developers what they think about PHP, they will probably tell you that it’s a very basic, unprofessional language that can be messy, lacks structure, doesn’t have a good IDE (integrated development environment) like Eclipse or RSA, and isn’t a good platform for a real website. If you ask most PHP developers what they think about Java, they will probably say that it’s overly complex and cumbersome, and that it isn’t a good platform because development time is just too slow and tedious. Which side is correct?
